Mohan Munasinghe - SCI Associated Professor

Professor Mohan Munasinghe is the Chairman of the SCI International Advisory Board, SCI Professorial Research Fellow and Professor of Sustainable Development at The University of Manchester. In 2007 he shared the Nobel Prize for Peace, as Vice Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4). Currently, he is Chairman of the Munasinghe Institute of Development (MIND), Colombo and Honorary Senior Advisor to the Sri Lanka Government.

He has earned post-graduate degrees in engineering, physics and development economics from Cambridge University (UK), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), and McGill University and Concordia University (Canada). Prof. Munasinghe has also received several honorary doctorates (honoris causa).

Highlights from 40 years of distinguished public service include participating in high level policy making, as Senior Energy Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka, Advisor to the United States Presidents Council on Environmental Quality, and Senior Advisor/Manager, World Bank. He also has hands-on field experience in over 60 countries, working on projects involving climate change, disaster management, economics (macro and micro), environment, energy, information technology, telecommunications, transport, urban infrastructure, and water resources.

He is well known for theoretical and practical contributions to trans-disciplinary research - especially for proposing the Sustainomics framework for making development more sustainable, which he first presented at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The approach is well known now, taught in several university courses, and practically applied in many countries.

He has taught as Visiting Professor at a number of leading universities worldwide, and conducted training workshops for several thousand senior officials from developing countries. He won many international prizes and medals for his research and its applications. Prof. Munasinghe has authored 92 scholarly books and over three hundred technical papers on economics, sustainable development, climate change, power, energy, water resources, transport, environment, disasters, and information technology. He is a Fellow of several internationally recognised Academies of Science, and serves on the editorial boards of over a dozen professional journals.
