Climate Change and Carbon
Tackling and adapting to climate change is a fundamental element of sustainability. By understanding the true scale of the challenge, the SCI can help to inform business and policymakers in their development of sustainable strategies for delivering low-carbon futures. The theme couples together quantitative carbon accounting and emissions pathway work with qualitative assessments of stakeholder and consumer views to better understand the impacts of reducing emissions and higher temperatures on society.
The SCI's ‘Climate Change and Carbon: Mitigation, Adaptation and Vulnerability' theme integrates the physical and social sciences to develop new perspectives, models and tools to support step-change developments to tackle climate change. Challenging conventional approaches to emission accounting, research within the theme engages academics with expertise across a number of key areas including energy scenario production, carbon accounting, food systems and international transport.
The theme's current activity is around three major areas of research: the flagship project on food system scenarios, carbon accounting and activity assessing emissions from international transport. The flagship draws together research expertise from the Stockholm Environment Institute, Satake Institute for Grain Process Engineering and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to produce a novel suite of food system scenarios addressing both climate change mitigation and adaptation in unison. Complimenting the SCI's innovative climate change research portfolio, researchers explicitly engage in policy and stakeholder engagement.
