How do cities learn?

The key research problem that this proposed activity addresses concerns how cities learn to become more sustainable.

This is a pressing task. By 2075 three quarters of the world population will be urban dwellers, giving a 50 year window to mainstream alternatives to business as usual.

Although cities around the world have committed to becoming more sustainable, and numerous solutions exist, they are struggling to change their development trajectories on the ground. As a result, funding agencies are prioritising applied, international research that addresses mainstreaming.

The proposed activities respond to this opportunity, focusing on understanding how change happens in a very practical sense in cities, and applying these insights in Greater Manchester and the global south.
