The Future of British Climate Strategy
This project, funded by the internal SCI small grant scheme, focused on UK climate policy and strategy and builds on the previous internally funded project on net zero populism.
As part of this project, a workshop was run with academic participants focused on climate politics and strategy with practitioners from various political parties as well as from NGOs and social movements seeking to positively affect the impact of the next election on climate action in the UK.
Following the workshop, a report has been produced titled 'Navigating the Backlash: The Future of British Climate Strategy'.
How is British politics changing in ways that affect the pursuit of ambitious climate action? In this report, based on a workshop of academic experts and key NGO participants, we present the key implications of recent changes, notably a rising backlash against climate policy, and the shift in approach by the Conservative government in response to it.
It raises various new dilemmas for the main two political parties themselves, which those pushing for ambitious climate action need to understand.
